It was leadership day, a day where activities took place, but not just normal activities…activities that helped you become a better person. We were joined by other students we didn’t know. We took our seats and listened to one another. It was a great start to leadership day. But what was coming up was the…..plank!
There were 5 people out of 7 (or) 8 doing the plank. I wasn’t as good as some people but I tried my best to keep it all together. It was such a new experience. Personally, I have never really done a plank, but I’ve seen other people do it. This time we were doing planking. Each group had to send 5 people down to do a plank. There were a few other people ‘taking a break’. Each group had to stay in a plank for as long as they could. There had to be 5 people planking, if there wasn’t you would be out. You also had to make sure you were planking properly, otherwise your team would be out too. There were also ‘judges’ that checked on your group usually to see if you were doing everything properly. Those are the rules for the game…but what did, really happened??
5, 4, 3, 2, 1…PLANK! Everyone squashed to the floor, trying to hold there strength. I squashed down with the rest of my group. I got into the plank and it began. I tried to stay in the plank for as long as I could but then I called out “switch”. Our teams ‘plan’ was to yell out switch when we needed to switch with someone that was not planking. The thing was, that wasn’t our best plan. To be completely honest, sometimes I yelled out switch because I thought I was tired but I knew I could stay up for longer. Unfortunately some of our team mates didn’t get heard. One of our team mates yelled out switch 5 times but none of us reacted. Sometimes we only had a 2 second break. Our group had a lot of tension. We were all yelling out switch at the same time but we all didn’t know how to react. Then, all of a sudden one of our team mates that were sitting out realised that only 4 people were planking, which meant we were out. Even tho we got out we all learnt something and we all tried our best.
I learnt so much from this experience. After one activity I learnt a lot. Like I said, I never usually plank so I was quite new to planking. At first I didn’t know what it was! But luckily one of my team mates told me. When I started planking I looked at everyone in my team and I knew that some of the people in my team were as uncomfortable as I am. I learnt a lot more about team work and communication. Communication isn’t just talking, I learnt communication can also be other things too. For example, someone waves at you, that is an action and that action means hello (which is a source of communication). Our groups communication skills could have improved the slightest bit, but nothing is perfect. I built on my teamwork skills. We needed to use a lot of teamwork because we all had to focus and we had to know what was going on. We also had to be aware on how everyone felt. We had to make sure that we were all feeling comfortable. We all had to be a team and work together as a team. I loved learning new things and doing new things!
Leadership day was such an amazing roller coaster. Everything we did taught me so much about myself and others. I can’t wait for next time!!
